Top 10 Reasons You Should Learn Martial Arts

Everyone who participates in martial arts shows improved confidence and better performance in school.
This is why I put together this guide with the top ten reasons you should learn martial arts.

1. Increased Confidence

Whether for you or your child, practicing martial arts boosts inner strength in ways that can be applied to all facets of the student’s life. In fact, children who participate in karate demonstrate an overall increase in poise and better academic performance than children who do not participate. So if you or your child are in need of an attitude adjustment, martial arts is where you need to be.

2. Full Workout

Looking for a new form of exercise? Martial arts is your answer as it provides a thorough body workout. Consistent practice increases overall mobility, improves your body’s response and increases muscle density. With Kenpo’s repetitive movements that combine Karate, Judo, Kung-Fu and Jiu-Jitsu, you will build intense muscle quickly, develop strength and burn fat.

3. Flexibility

Repetitive actions like high kicks, low stances, fancy footwork and mobility promise to benefit your overall health. Did you know that flexibility has many benefits? Some of them, according to Kaiser Permanente, include

  • Improved posture
  • Better freedom of movement
  • Reduced muscle soreness and tension
  • Improved relaxation of mind and body
  • Reduced risk of injury

The multi-directional movement of Kenpo Karate makes it a perfect martial art for those wanting to improve flexibility. So if flexibility is your goal, you will gain it and feel better.

4. Better Coordination

All martial arts practice awareness and coordinating movement with another person. Some martial arts even include the use of props and tools. All of these factors improve the coordination and awareness of the participant’s body as well as helping the participant to be aware of the people and objects around them.
Practices like Kenpo encourage the lower part of the body to act as a base from which the upper body can maneuver and operate. This idea has been borrowed by many martial arts systems.

5. Self Defense Skills

One obvious benefit to learning martial arts is an improved ability to perform self-defense maneuvers in situations where there is a real threat. According to recent data, an aggravated assault occurs every 43 seconds in the United States. Martial arts prepares people to defend themselves in dangerous, life-threatening situations. This is ideal for you and your children.

6. Lower Blood Pressure and Heart Rate

Martial arts students have been shown to have lower blood pressure and heart rates. Because of its similarity to high intensity training, martial arts can improve overall heart health, lower cholesterol and provide more regulated blood sugar and insulin levels. Martial artists enjoy all the physical benefits of regular exercise without having to run on a treadmill or lift weights. It’s a stellar option for improving your health.

7. Improves Your Mental Stamina

Recent research shows that exercise (like martial arts) actually produced a physical change in the brain that promotes better memory and learning skills. The same study observed that a new case of dementia is observed every four seconds globally. Those who want to prevent this debilitating condition can fight it by participating in martial arts.

8. Improved Social Skills

Because it is held in a team environment, martial arts can help you develop social skills. Team members work alongside one another towards similar goals as they learn and grow together. This is especially beneficial for children in martial arts who learn skills of making new friends, conflict resolutions, leadership and showing compassion.

9. Develop Self-Discipline

By attending martial arts classes you’ll become accustomed to direction and structure. In this environment you must pay attention to the task at hand and rid your mind of distractions. It is crucial to realize that achieving your martial arts goals depends on you. No one else can do it for you. This promotes self-reliance and independence as you are the one who will invest the work that will result in growth. To be your best, you need to be dedicated and put in the effort required. As you progress, you will gain self-discipline that will enhance every aspect of your life.

10. Stress Relief

Did you know that practicing martial arts can help relieve stress? This is accomplished by focusing on the present and things you can control. Martial arts also emphasizes being in complete control of your breathing and thoughts. When you do this you are learning a skill that can be applied throughout all areas of life. When you’re more focused and confident, you will relieve yourself of stress in so many other parts of life too. Going to martial arts class will help you live with an increased mental focus and a greater appreciation for the world around you through a fun, safe and challenging workout in an encouraging environment with like-minded people.

The next step is the hardest…..coming through the door.

Karate Newsletter ~ June 2022

Here we are in June–knocking on summer’s door.

The last couple of years have been challenging for our school. Since the time we closed for Covid we have only recovered about 30% of our students.

Below is a quote from Mr. Bob White which I believe is so very right on.

“A couple of years ago I hit some tennis balls with a good friend of mine who is a tennis pro, Andy Stewart. As I mentioned, he is a good friend. When the lesson was over, I paid for the lesson and Andy said I did not have to pay because it was on him. I told him that he was a professional and I know this is how he makes his living, and I gave him the money. I am sensitive about this because, as a person who also gets paid for the services provided, I have experienced people not wanting to pay their dues and [they] assume they don’t have to contribute to the school. There are not really many wealthy karate instructors or tennis teachers for that matter. In order for a service business to stay open, it is important that responsibilities are met. If the attitude is good, you give gladly, knowing it is an investment that will give you big returns.”

Your support is gratefully received. Remember, we are a 501C and donations are tax deductible.

Now for a bit of good news. First, on June 29th at 7:00 pm, Mr. White will be promoting David Brock to his 9th degree. Mr. White will be presenting him the belt he (Mr. White) wore for over 20 years as a 9th. David Brock has had a tremendous 50-year career as a student, competitor and teacher. I am immensely proud he will be Mr. White’s highest-ranking student. The ceremony will be conducted at Mr. White’s school in Costa Mesa where I know there will be a full studio of witnesses eager to show respect for this Kenpo Legend. If possible, drop by and congratulate this Kenpo Great.

Secondly, on July 9th we will be celebrating Mr. Bob Mitchell’s Birthday, here at KAKK. This will be festive and a prime opportunity to get photos and to meet some of the most exceptional martial artists. The event will be a potluck from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If you have any questions, please email me at wycl55@sbcglobal.net

Hope to see you all at the studio soon.
Thank you.

Hello Karate Family and Friends,

This year is zooming past! It is great to see all who have begun to return to class. We enjoyed an awesome seminar with Mr. Ed Downey, and we hope to see him again soon. A very special Congratulations to Mr. Bob Mitchell on his promotion to 10th Degree!

We are still holding adult classes on Mondays from 6-7 pm–all belt ranks are welcome. This has been a great learning time for us all and we will keep this going. We hope to have more guest instructors during this year and will keep you posted.

What is a karate instructor? Though many engage in martial arts for sport, recreation and exercise, instructors primarily train students in the use of particular combat techniques. Instruction provides students with valuable self-defense techniques as they understand the history, philosophy, and safety skills of their martial art. Teachers train students in combat techniques–mostly for recreation or for self-defense. They develop individual training programs to coach, observe, assess and offer feedback on their students’ progress in a safe and healthy training environment; all while developing and practicing their own skills.

Karate instructors teach karate to students in groups or individually. They demonstrate techniques and help students perfect their own techniques. Instructors guide students’ progress and prepare them to advance in rank. In addition to testing students throughout the year, instructors will hold ceremonies to award students their new belts. If students enter a competition, the teacher will help prepare them for that. An instructor may travel to competitions with their students to coach and support. Instructors also help organize seminars or demonstrations.

In conclusion, we teach Martial Arts classes for students ages four and up. This includes teaching various forms (sets of moves) as well as sparring, self-defense and leadership principles. We also instill life values such as courtesy, respect and discipline so that while they are improving their physical fitness, we are helping to transform who they are in their day-to-day lives. At all times we are observing students and helping them to improve through individual coaching during classes. This feedback is crucial to their development.

As a full-time head instructor, I manage the school which means I formulate curriculum and individual lesson plans. I also email announcements and newsletters that are relative to student success, and I help families understand the various aspects of our programs. In case you were not aware, all our instructors are volunteers who have achieved at least a Black Belt in our art.

Thank you for taking the time to read.
